The class covered the basics of ChatGPT, including its design as a conversational chatbot using a large language model and neural network. It emphasized ChatGPT’s language understanding and generation capabilities and its application in various platforms like Microsoft and Duolingo.
The session also highlighted the importance of crafting effective prompts, discussing the 5-tier method (Persona, Context, Task, Input, Format) for prompt creation. This approach enhances the accuracy and specificity of ChatGPT’s responses, making it a powerful tool for various applications. This method breaks prompt creation down into 5 parts to help you craft the perfect prompt.
The 5-Tier Method
To use the 5-tier method, simply go through each of the tiers, decide if its relevant and add it to your prompt.
Persona
In the persona tier, you give the AI a role to play. “You are a 4-H Camper.” “You are an Extension Agent in North Carolina.” This primes the AI to give a more specific answer to your situation.
Background
In the background tier, you treat the AI like it’s a new coworker. Give it the same information you would give a person that is new to your office or task. Let it know what resources you have access to. If the task revolves around an event, give the AI an idea of where the event is located.
Task
In the Task tier, you simply give the AI the job that it is to do. This is a simple command sentence. “Create a list of 5 items.” “Write a blurb for the Canva poster.”
Input
The Input tier is where you give the AI any other information that it needs. These are highly specific information to the task. “The class needs to be 50 minutes.” “The task should allow the group to break up into groups of 3.” The last is Format.
Format
Format is how you want the answer to be structured. If you want a list, specify that. If you want an outline, where each point has three subpoints, you also specify that here.
