Zoom has two settings that can be easily confused but serve different purposes. While non-NC State individuals can be assigned as co-hosts during the meeting, they cannot be set up as alternative hosts.

An alternative host can be set before the meeting and has the ability to start the meeting on behalf of the host. If the host is present in the meeting, the alternative host will automatically be set as a co-host. This option is only available to @ncsu.edu addresses.

On the other hand, a co-host can be assigned during the meeting and has some but not all of the same controls as the host. The host and co-hosts will appear at the top of the participant list, making it easier to manage the meeting. It also adds a sense of authority to the co-hosts, indicating that they should be speaking during the meeting.

To assign someone as a co-host during the meeting, follow these steps:

  1. Click on “Manage Participants” at the bottom of the Zoom window.
  2. Find the participant you want to assign as a co-host and hover over their name.
  3. Click “More.”
  4. Select “Make Co-Host.”
  5. The co-host will now have the same abilities as the host, allowing them to manage the meeting as needed.

The alternative host option is set up before the meeting and allows someone else to start the meeting on behalf of the host, while the co-host option is assigned during the meeting and provides some assistance to the host in managing the meeting.
