Podcasting in Extension

What is a Podcast?

There are many definitions of a podcast, but it is basically a digital audio file made available on the internet for downloading to a computer or mobile device. Podcasts are typically available as a series, new installments of which can be received by subscribers automatically.A simple definition of a podcast is a radio program delivered via the internet that is available on demand.

Extension Podcasts

There are many applications and services available to produce and manage podcasts. Extension IT recommends that all Extension podcasts use the NC State Extension Buzzsprout account for managing Podcasts. Using this service allows for protection of the content for business continuity purposes. Please email the Extension IT Helpdesk or call 919-513-7000 if you are interested in producing an Extension Podcast.

Podcast Best Practices

Buzzsprout offers some really good documentation on starting a podcast. How to Start a Podcast: Complete Step-by-Step Guide is a great place to get starting thinking about your podcast. Please note that all of the suggestions may not apply to Extension content but this guide will give you a lot of information about how to make your podcast be successful. In order to meet accessibility requirements, you will need to create transcript for each episode of your podcast. You can do this directly from your script, if you use one, or you can create the transcript after recording your audio. Our recommendation is to use Descript to create your transcripts and edit your podcasts.

Cost

Creating a podcast requires a time commitment so there is certainly a time cost if you decide to take on a podcast project. You will need to make sure that you are committed to regularly producing content if you want to be successful.

There are additional costs associated with managing a podcast. Our recommended Buzzsprout account is $12/month and Descript for creating transcripts and editing audio is an additional $12/month. These prices may change, so please email the Extension IT Helpdesk or call 919-513-7000 if you are interested in producing an Extension Podcast.
