Burke Pollard, Summer Intern
Hello this is Burke Pollard, a summer intern with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Burke County Center. A good portion of my summer has been with our Burke County 4-H Youth Development agent, Nicki Carpenter. 4-H is one of the biggest youth programs in the United States with over 7 million 4-H members in all 50 states and U.S. territories. North Carolina 4-H has over 10,000 established programs across the state. By joining 4-H, you gain the opportunity to learn new topics and skills, expand on your interests, and make new friends with which to share these ideas and interests. 4-H provides members with project opportunities such as animal science, expressive and communication arts, family and consumer science, mechanical science, natural resources and personal growth and development to name a few. As a 4-H alumnus, I can confidently say that 4-H provided me with many opportunities to better my leadership skills, public speaking ability, teamwork skills, critical thinking and problem-solving. Some of my best memories come from events at our local Burke Center and statewide events and programs at different North Carolina public colleges and universities. The majority of my 4-H projects included livestock and mechanical science but members can always find something they’re interested in.
