Have you ever wondered what it is like to be an Master Gardener℠ Volunteer of Wilson County? We asked some of our volunteers this question and here is what they had to say about the Extension Master Gardener℠ program of Wilson County.
“The Master Gardener Volunteer program has improved my life by making me more aware of the local vegetation, like around Lake Wilson, in local yards, and flowers. I am more knowledgeable about herbicides and pesticides. I have made a good group of friends that I otherwise would not have known. I enjoy the monthly educational programs.”
“The Wilson County Extension Master Gardener Program has afforded me an opportunity to increase my gardening knowledge, through the application of training, in the beautiful Wilson Botanical Gardens. To be of service to my community, steeped in nature with like-minded souls, has been a delightful and rewarding adventure.”
The Extension Master Gardener Volunteer program is a volunteer organization, turning 50 years old in 2023. The Wilson County Extension Master Gardener Volunteers are now accepting applications for a late fall/winter training class. Classes are typically held once a week for 10-13 weeks for 3 hours each class. Class dates and times are selected by the majority of participants. Trainees will receive 40 hours of classroom, hands on and road trip education. Classes will progress from botany and soils to vegetables and turf, insects, diseases and landscape plants. Applications can be received by calling 252-237-0113. Those accepted into the program will be invited to an open house to discuss potential volunteer opportunities.
After training, participants receive a volunteer internship certificate. You are asked to volunteer or “pay back” the 40 hours of training with 40 hours of volunteer service in one year. Then you receive another certificate stating Master Gardener status.
Volunteer opportunities include publicity, youth programs, treasure tree, exhibits, greenhouse/propagation, public speaking, Wilson Botanical Garden curators, leadership/advisory, fundraising, and the Garden helpline.
